We all know what YouTube and similar video hosting sites has done to marketing and advertisement. We can look at the latest promotional tools by Doritos and see that somewhere, someone is listening to what consumers have to say about advertisement. Anyone with a camera phone and a computer can film, edit, and post a short video clip making some sort of statement.
How long will it be until this bleeds over into the musical world (if it hasn't already)?
Will there be a day when record labels are seeking revenue not from studio musicians but rather from the teen-aged garage band member who recorded their favorite song in Pro Tools or a similar consumer-marketed music software? The masses are getting pretty good at reproducing what has previously been unattainable except by professionals. But that is just it right? Is everything that is being turned in on YouTube and etc. simply representations of what has already been highly produced and scrutinized by industry professionals? Or are we seeing a shift in programming?
Will the quality of the work (both film and music) suffer because of this new desire for Grassroots marketing? Or will the industry be spurned to put forth media that is yet again 'cutting edge' and thus perpetuating the cycle all over again?
Will there be sites that host not simply funny homemade musical videos but avenues that actually are a resource for musicians and band members? This could be a great idea for the Christian Music Industry. How about a place where small town worship leaders can log into and see what other churches are doing, how they are doing it, whether it is working or not, and tools that will allow them to reproduce similar results.
If you have lots of time on your hands I suggest you begin such an endeavor... And all I ask for the idea (after you get rich) is possibly a lunch or a hot cup of coffee.

You are perched on the slicing edge of an uncertain media frenzy, my friend. I think that the more people involved... the more decentralized it gets... the better (and worse) the end product becomes.
Sort of like a lose and your out basketball tournament. With 5 teams you might have a really good team and some mediocre teams. However if you have 8,000,000 teams... then one team will have to win a lot of games to win that thing. So... you will have the absolute best... and the absolute worst. And the best will always rise to the top.
huh? Did that make sense?
oh yeah perfectly. Just let me untie my brain a bit.
