Here goes:

I purposefully did not read any reviews or comments about Prince Caspian. I did not want to be jaded by expecting too much or too little. So Sunday night Joel and I went to see the movie. Here are my thoughts.

I liked to movie, do you know why? Because it is a good story. And typically good stories make good movies. However I am under the impression that the makers of the Narnia movies at SOME point are going to have to stray away from the biblical analogies and deeper spiritual meanings of the books. If they did not then they would be intentionally producing a gospel-centered product and I don't see that happening. So I was under the assumption that this would happen at SOME point. Well I think Caspian was that point.

However, I think to branch away from the intended story theme and attempt to make a good story will hurt the movies in the long run because lets face it... we've seen the giant epic movies already. The directors of Narnia probably won't show us anything new (probably). So take out the spiritual undertones and all your left with is a good story with epic battles for good and evil which have been done plenty of times before.

I think those of us who are familiar with he books know that Caspian was WAY different then the book. But I suspect that future editions will only produce more discrepancies and differences. I mean come on how are they going to turn Eustice into a dragon in Voyage of The Dawn Treader without making it spiritual?

Other than completely rearranging the timeline, creating battles for the sake of having more action, turning Susan the Gentle into Susan the Deadly, turning Peter into an absolute tool, and a few other bad ideas... it was a good movie.

Is it like the book? No. Are there still meaningful spiritual overtones? Yes. Even though the exchange between Caspian, Peter, and the White Witch never takes place in the book, it is a great picture of how easily man's heart is swayed by the shiny promises of sin.

Dawn Treader is going to be difficult. There aren't any massive battle scenes. They are either going to have to make some drastic changes (like creating a mutiny on the ship) or embrace the book. It will be interesting to see.
