Remember when Jesus calmed the storm? He had told His disciples they were going to the other side of the lake and upon the storm's insurgence they called out to Him and He calmed the storm. By today's spirituality, we would consider that a success story. {Hence: we find ourselves in an hour of need, we call out to Jesus and He swoops in and miraculously saves the day.} We could travel with Christian conferences and woo audiences with our story of bravery and salvation. We could write a book about it and sell millions of copies in that Christian section at the front of Wal-Mart between the children’s books and the cook books.
But what happened before Jesus calmed the storm? He rebuked the disciples… that’s what! He questioned their faith.
Why?
1) He was saddened that they did not believe Him when He had already told them that they were crossing over. They should have been strong enough to believe that He would take care of them in any situation. Their lack of faith was caused from an impoverished view of who HE was.
or could it be…
2) He questioned their faith because He was trying to tell them that they had the ability to calm the storm themselves. The power to do such a thing was within them all along. Their lack of faith was caused from an impoverished view of who THEY were.
Not sure how that lines up scripturally but it is an interesting perspective to that event don’t you think?
