You know growing up in the Bible belt I always heard how Mormons were wrong in what they believed. However, I never really cared enough about how wrong they were to investigate what they believed (my fault I know).
Anyway, growing up I picked up more information here and there about their beliefs and history. However, that was even biased and 3rd hand information.
I am currently writing a paper on Mormon verses Evangelical Christian Christology (basically who do we say Christ is verses who they say Christ is). In doing so, I have had to read a lot of the history on the Mormons (namely The Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith)… compiled by Joseph Smith himself.
What I have discovered is that they were men of little religion and even less discipline. The very thing in which they are known for (polygamy) is the very thing that almost destroyed them and is the very reason Joseph Smith was jailed and shot down. Any time they had a desire to do something (or not to do something) they deemed that God gave them a ‘revelation’ to support their doing it or their not doing it.
Their beginnings sound more like a Jerry Springer episode than church history!
