Can we all agree that some things in the Bible are just hard for us to grasp?
Take John 7:1-5 for example. Particularly verse 5.
"After this Jesus went about in Galilee. He would not go about in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill him. 2 Now the Jews' Feast of Booths was at hand. 3 So his brothers said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing. 4 For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.” 5 For not even his brothers believed in him."
Here is the commentary from the ESV. So real and genuine was Jesus' humanity, and so well hidden was his deity before he began his earthly ministry, that even those who had lived in the same house with him for nearly 30 years did not know who he was: not even his brothers believed in him. They lived and ate and slept in the same rooms as the eternal Son of God and did not know it.
I wonder things like...
- Did they never suspect? I mean he was perfect right?
- Did Mary ever slip up and say something like, "Don't taunt your brother James, he sort of a big deal."
- Did Jesus ever hear others' frustration on a hot day and say, "Oh yeah, you think it's hot here?"

I love #3.
so, do you think - does this say -the brothers didn't know at all that he was Christ or is it saying they did not "believe" meaning accept him as Christ - at that present time?
did they "know" but not "believe"?
Hee hee! Comment 2 made me think of those t-shirts you can get that have the fingers doing the in air quotations and reads " I'm kind of a big deal around here."
It is amazing that there was so much unbelief when so many miracles were performed...but here we are with the whole bible sitting infront of us that gives a "full account" and people are still crippled by thier own unbelief.
Anonymous - That's a good point, and probably (if we're being logical) more accurate. I mean being the Messiah is a pretty hard thing to prove when you haven't started your ministry yet.
Shelly, right on!
Good thoughts man...
